Lot information
Julius Theodor Gruss, an important Czech landscape painter of the 19th century, captured in this work a romantic landscape with the ruins of Kostomlaty Castle, located in the Bohemian Central Highlands. Gruss masterfully combines the atmospheric effect of the setting sun with a subtle palette of colors, underlining the mystery and desolation of the castle in harmony with the surrounding nature. In the foreground of the scene, it depicts a rural figure with a child, which gives the work a human dimension. This work is a typical example of Gruss' ability to capture both the dramatic elements of architecture and the intimacy of the Czech landscape.
