Rembrandt school 17th century, Portrait of a gentleman

The painting shows a middle-aged man looking upwards with a questioning gaze. His mouth is slightly open, as if the man is about to begin speaking in order to answer a question. His facial expression is spiritualised. His long dark hair, which falls in curls to his shoulders, and his thick beard look well-groomed but lack any fashionable style. The man is dressed in a simple red doublet, with a yellow-brown coat with fringes around his shoulders and upper body. The posture, the upward gaze, the non-contemporary clothing and the simple hairstyle show that this is not a portrait but a tronie, a character head based on a model. This type of painting was very popular with Rembrandt and his successors.   Oil on canvas, 67 × 53 cm
