Tadeusz Popiel studied at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow under Jan Matejko, and then perfected his technique in Vienna and Munich. Revered during his lifetime, he was a versatile artist - he painted historical and religious compositions, genre scenes, portraits and landscapes. He was also involved in monumental painting and co-created the famous "Panorama of Raclawice."
Popiel's work grew out of the academic tradition, characterized by drawing proficiency, harmonious composition and attention to the mood of the representation. In addition to monumental productions, the artist was keen on landscape subjects, especially in the later period of his career, when he paid increasing attention to intimate views of nature.
The painting on offer is a more lyrical version of his work. The artist focuses on mood and subtle observation of nature, combining academic painting culture with sensitivity to light, color and the poetic nature of the depicted motif.
