Depicted half-length according to the canons of the earliest Russian tradition, Christ the Saviour gazes directly at the viewer with a fixed and solemn expression. He raises his right hand in a gesture of blessing, often characterized by the dvuperstie, the two-finger sign traditionally used by the Old Believers—while in his left hand he holds the open Gospel, a symbol of Divine Law.
