In this version, Saint Nicholas is not depicted as an elderly bishop giving a blessing, but as the city's defender. This iconography comes from a 14th-century legend: it is said that the Saint appeared in the sky during the siege of Mozhajsk, brandishing a sword and terrifying the invaders, who then retreated. On the upper flap is depicted the Mandylion of Edessa, an icon considered the oldest and most important portrait of Jesus in the Christian tradition.
Item condition grading: **** good.
The icon is in a good state of preservation with the normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time.
