Tempera on a wooden panel with a silver-plated brass frame
Icon painted on a wooden panel depicting the Mother of God "It Is Truly Meet" (Dostojno Est', or Axion Estin), one of the most celebrated Marian images of the Orthodox tradition, particularly venerated throughout Russia and closely associated with the cult that developed on Mount Athos.
The painted surface is almost entirely covered by a finely repoussé and chased silvered metal oklad (riza), leaving visible only the faces and hands of the Virgin and the Christ Child. The Mother of God is depicted standing and holding the Christ Child on her left arm, following a solemn composition reminiscent of the great Byzantine processional icons. The Christ Child is shown blessing with His right hand while holding the scroll of the Holy Scriptures in His left, symbolizing His nature as the Incarnate Word.
The halos of both the Virgin and the Child are embellished with rich radiating decoration created through deep radial fluting and delicate engraved details, while the refined repoussé work lends remarkable plasticity to the drapery and folds of the garments.
Surrounding the central image is an elaborate narrative cycle composed of four relief scenes, each accompanied by identifying Church Slavonic inscriptions.
In the upper left register is depicted the Descent into Hades (Anastasis), showing Christ triumphant as He liberates Adam and Eve from the realm of death. The upper right register illustrates the Annunciation, with the Archangel Gabriel proclaiming to the Virgin the mystery of the Incarnation.
The lower left register represents the Nativity of the Mother of God, with Saint Anne reclining after childbirth while attendants care for the newborn Mary. The lower right register depicts the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, where the young Mary is received by the High Priest before the Temple of Jerusalem.
The Church Slavonic inscriptions include the liturgical title of the central image, "It Is Truly Meet", taken from the ancient Marian hymn of the Byzantine liturgy, while a broad border engraved with elegant vegetal and floral motifs frames the entire composition.

The iconography of the Mother of God "It Is Truly Meet" (Axion Estin) originates from the celebrated miracle on Mount Athos, where, according to tradition, the Archangel Gabriel revealed the text of the Axion Estin hymn, which subsequently became one of the principal Marian prayers of the Orthodox liturgy.

During the nineteenth century this iconographic type became exceptionally widespread throughout Imperial Russia, particularly in icons intended for private devotion. The workshops of central Russia—especially those of Moscow, Mstëra, Palekh, and Kholuy—produced numerous icons covered with precious metal oklads (rizas), often enriched with scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin according to an iconographic program intended to summarize the principal events of the history of salvation.

Item condition grading: *** fair.
The lot is in a good state of preservation with the normal wear and defects commensurate with its age and use over time. The metal oklad (riza) retains its original structure in its entirety and displays natural oxidation of the metallic surface, together with light surface abrasions and minor signs of wear consistent with the age of the artifact. The faces and hands, left uncovered by the metal revetment, preserve the original painting in good, legible condition.
The wooden panel appears stable and consistent with traditional construction techniques. The reverse shows natural signs of age and use, with no evidence of invasive structural restoration. Overall, the icon is in good general condition, fully preserving its historical and artistic characteristics.
