估計: 800 - 1 200 EUR
Height x width: 53 x 47 cm
Tempera on panel
Icon on a wooden panel depicting the Protection of the Mother of God (Pokrov Presvyatoy Bogoroditsy), one of the most solemn and theologically significant subjects in the Russian Orthodox tradition.
The composition illustrates the celebrated miracle that took place in the Church of Blachernae in Constantinople during the tenth century, when the Virgin appeared to the faithful gathered in prayer, extending her veil as a symbol of the divine protection bestowed upon the Christian people.
At the centre of the composition, the Mother of God appears within a radiant mandorla, suspended before the architecture of the church and surrounded by five angels. She raises her arms in the traditional gesture of intercession while displaying her protective veil, symbolising her perpetual spiritual guardianship over the entire community of believers.
The scene is organised according to a carefully balanced symmetrical composition. Flanking the Virgin are groups of apostles, saints, bishops, monks, and righteous figures from both the Old and New Testaments, depicted upon delicate clouds and arranged according to a precise hierarchical order. Among them are Saint John the Baptist, several Fathers of the Church, and numerous holy bishops identifiable by their richly ornamented liturgical vestments and the Gospel books they hold.
The lower register depicts Saint Romanos the Melodist, standing at the centre upon an ambo and proclaiming a liturgical hymn from an unfurled scroll. To his right appears Saint Andrew the Fool for Christ, accompanied by his disciple Epiphanius, the traditional witnesses to the miraculous apparition of the Virgin. On the left are assembled ecclesiastical dignitaries, members of the imperial court, and other faithful gathered within the basilica.
The entire scene unfolds before an elaborate ecclesiastical architectural setting characterised by elegant arcades, gilded domes, and refined Neo-Byzantine ornamental details. Executed with remarkable perspectival balance, the architectural framework constitutes one of the defining features of the composition and attests to the high quality of its execution.
The background, painted in warm ochre and brown tones, enhances the luminous brilliance of the gold-leaf haloes and the Slavonic inscriptions, while the harmonious use of green, red, ivory, and gold creates a composition of remarkable decorative refinement.

The icon belongs to the finest tradition of Russian icon painting produced during the closing decades of the nineteenth century. Its compositional scheme faithfully follows the celebrated models of the seventeenth-century Moscow School, reinterpreted according to the refined academic taste that developed during the Imperial period.
Between the second half of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth, the principal workshops of Moscow, Mstëra, Palekh, and Kholuy produced numerous icons intended for private devotion, characterised by a renewed appreciation of traditional Russian painting combined with exceptionally high technical standards. During this period, the subject of the Pokrov enjoyed particular popularity, becoming one of the most frequently commissioned devotional images for both ecclesiastical and private use.
The present icon is distinguished by the precision of its drawing, the sophistication of its architectural design, the rich articulation of its figural groups, and the remarkable preservation of its original polychromy. These characteristics support its attribution to a high-quality workshop in Central Russia, dating to the final decades of the nineteenth century.

Item condition grading: **** good.
The painted surface is in good overall condition, displaying age-appropriate craquelure, light surface abrasions, and minor wear along the edges, all consistent with the age of the icon. The wooden panel remains structurally stable and consistent with traditional construction techniques, exhibiting natural signs of age and no evidence of invasive structural restoration.
