Tyrolean Master, 16th Century., St. John the Baptist

A powerful and expressive sculpture of St. John the Baptist, standing and holding a book, a traditional attribute. The saint is depicted with a rugged, ascetic appearance, reflecting his life in the wilderness. His face is gaunt, with a full beard and deeply carved eyes that convey a sense of spiritual intensity and contemplation.
He is clad in his characteristic camel-hair garment, which is rendered with a textured, almost coarse surface, contrasting with the fluid, heavily draped red and gold cloak that wraps around his body. The skillful use of polychromy and gilding enhances the sculpture's dramatic effect, with remnants of gold leaf and vibrant red pigment visible across the surface.
The posture is dynamic, with one foot slightly forward, giving the figure a sense of readiness and purpose.
