Polychrome and gilded wood sculpture, on a carved and gilded Rococo-style base.
This finely carved sculpture depicts a saint, likely a bishop, distinguished by his traditional vestments and mitre. The saint stands in a graceful, slightly contrapposto pose, holding a crozier (pastoral staff) in one hand and a model of a church or building in the other. This latter attribute often identifies the saint as a founder or patron of a specific religious building.
The sculpture is a superb example of the Baroque prevalent in Southern Germany during the 18th century. The carving is highly detailed, with a focus on flowing, naturalistic drapery that creates a sense of movement and drama. The remnants of polychromy and gilding give the figure a rich, textured surface, with the vibrant red and gold tones hinting at its original splendor.
The base, a later addition, is characteristic of the Rococo period, with its elaborate, asymmetrical scrollwork and shell motifs (rocaille). The entire composition reflects the theatrical and emotional quality of religious art from this era. Polychrome and gilded wood sculpture, on a carved and gilded Rococo-style base. Height: 35.5 cm
