Alessandro Rosa was born in 1982 in Rome. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and has worked as a video designer with the Santasangre theatre collective since 2004.His work, consisting mainly of video installations, originates and develops from a theoretical reflection that sees in the philosophy of language, aesthetics and psychology its foundations, focusing on the problem of perception from an interpretative point of view. Recurring elements in his works are: Rorshach's spots, which through specularity suggest an anthropomorphic intentionality that induces a comparative interpretation between sign and object; images such as water, the circle and the square, which introduce the problem of perception from an interpretative point of view. By relating these elements, the referential relationship between the iconic sign and the value attributed to it by common sense is broken: meaning is thus not to be sought in the direct relationship between sign and thing but, in properly linguistic terms, in the interpretation of the signs and terms that are proposed from time to time. Another expedient he uses to this end is to associate words with their relative meanings or etymologies extrapolated from the dictionary, in order to demonstrate that naming, whether verbal or iconic, is not based on the direct relationship between sign and object but rather on the chain of substitutions or translations of one sign into another sign.
Between 2007 and 2016 he participated in several group exhibitions in Italy and abroad, including Les intermittences du coeur, curated by Manuela Pacella at the Ex elettrofonica in Rome; Icon, curated by Davide Walter Pairone, at the Quattrocentometriquadri Gallery in Ancona and Patria interiore, curated by Manuela Pacella, at the Golden Thread Gallery in Belfast. He also participated in the 54th Venice Biennale as part of the Illuminazioni exhibition, Arsenale -Tese di San Cristoforo; My Generation, curated by Manuela Pacella at the Museo Pietro Canonica in Rome and Six steps to obviousness.
