Silenus, after the archaeological model

Ths model for this sculpture was found in the Pompeii excavations in 1864 and is currently located in the Archaeological Museum of Naples. The original sculpture is bronze and depicts Silenus holding a circle and a serpent. It was probably a structure for a basin.



The version proposed here belongs to the archaeological taste that spread after the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Chiurazzi foundries in Naples were specialized in copying the sculptures found in the excavations. The bronze has no foundry stamp, but due to the quality of its execution it could be attributed to the foundry.
