Lion figure made of lavinite, cast Lavinit Company. Perlicz and Krupka?, Wloclawek, 1920s/30s. Poland.
The company Lavinit. Perlicz and Krupka was registered in 1923 in Wloclawek. Its partners Natan (Nachman) Krupka and Baruch-Lazar Perlicz purchased the patent of lavinite (a metal alloy with an admixture of sulfur and sand) from German entrepreneur Willy Henker, its inventor. Lavinite had been produced in Germany since about 1912 in Berlin. Henker also sold the rights to produce lavinite to several other entities.
At the peak of its development, Lavinit. Perlicz and Krupka offered more than 100 decorative products made of lavinite according to designs patented by Kunststein-Industrie W. Henker & CO: vases, clocks, platters, lamps and bases for them, ashtrays, candlesticks, figures and jardinieres. There were products in Art Nouveau, Historicist, Art Déco and Oriental styles.
A definitive determination of the provenance of the lion figure is not possible due to the similarity of Polish and foreign products. Manufacturers producing lavinite products rarely signed their products.
