Winter Landscape with Sleigh Travelers Attacked by Wolves - 19th Century

This dramatic narrative painting captures a perilous scene set within a dense, snow-covered forest. The central focus is a group of travelers in a horse-drawn sleigh, desperately attempting to escape a pack of wolves in a harrowing struggle for survival. The artist utilizes the cold, unforgiving landscape—featuring towering fir trees and frozen water—to amplify the tension of the encounter, a motif that was highly evocative in 19th-century romantic and genre painting. The wide, panoramic composition emphasizes the isolation of the travelers and the swift, predatory movement of the wolves, effectively conveying a sense of urgent, unfolding action. Notable for its storytelling intensity, the work reflects the period's interest in the sublime and sometimes dangerous forces of the natural world. Oil on plywood, 72 x 128 cm
