Biography
He studied at the Vienna Academy, in Rome, and at the Kraków School of Fine Arts under Jan Matejko. From 1900 onward, he lived permanently in Paris. He was a member of the Academy of St. Luke in Rome. He painted portraits, genre scenes, as well as religious paintings and large historical compositions in the spirit of academic painting. He created series of paintings illustrating literary works—Homer’s *Odyssey* and Sienkiewicz’s *Quo Vadis*. He was the initiator and co-creator of several panoramas, of which the following, painted jointly with Wojciech Kossak (and others)—'Racławice' (1893–94; currently in Wrocław, formerly in Lviv)—and, together with Jan Stanisławski and Tadeusz Popiel, 'Golgotha' (1896; currently in Los Angeles). Fragments of the ‘Battle of Sibin’ (1897), which had been cut into pieces, appeared several times at auctions in Warsaw in 1991.
