Jerzy Hoppen (1891–1969) – graphic artist, painter. In 1913, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. From 1914 to 1921, he lived in Petrograd. From 1921, he studied art at Vilnius University and taught at the Vilnius School of Drawing. From 1931, he was an assistant professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Stefan Batory University in Vilnius and head of the Graphic Arts Studio (associate professor—1937). From 1946, he lived in Poland. From 1947 to 1961, he was head of the Department of Graphic Arts at the University of Toruń.
In his historical work, he was both an artist and a historian as well as a conservator. Hopen painted scenes of Vilnius, created theater sets and book illustrations, and restored the interiors of architectural monuments in Vilnius and the surrounding area. He is best known, however, for his sculptures. The Baroque and Classical architecture of Vilnius became the main theme of his graphic works. Between 1924 and 1927, he published the series “Old Vilnius” in three portfolios, combining visible realism with romantic moods. The quality of the series is evidenced by the fact that it was acquired for their collections by, among others, the British Museum in London, the National Library in Paris, and the Graphic Arts Collection of the University of Warsaw Library. These prints were also recognized at the Polish Graphic Arts Salon in Warsaw in 1928 and awarded a silver medal in Poznań in 1929.
