Lot information
This leaf, entitled Ken no keiko, is one of the playful and satirical works of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the most important masters of ukiyo-e. It depicts anthropomorphic animals - a tiger, a fox and a frog - in a comical scene of swordsmanship. In reality, they are caricatures of three famous kabuki actors: the frog represents Nakamura Utaemon IV, the fox Matsumoto Kōshiro VI and the tiger Ichikawa Kuzo II.
