A very rare trial 1/6 thaler (złotówka) of Augustus III of Saxony dated 1763, struck at the Dresden Mint in pure silver. In Kahnt’s catalogue, the type is designated LP – Liebhaberpreis (“collector’s price”), a designation applied to particularly rare issues that are difficult to value.
The year 1763 marked the final year of the reign of Augustus III of Saxony. The King died in Dresden on 5 October of that year, making this date one of the final issues of his coinage. Regular circulation 1/6 thalers of 1763 are known in several varieties and belong to the last issues of this denomination struck under Augustus III.
Ex. Münzzentrum Rheinland, Auction 205, Lot 2313.
The present example is gilt and shows traces of former mounting as well as scratches. Despite these imperfections, the coin retains very well-defined detail in the portrait and in the elaborate heraldic composition on the reverse.
The coin is minted on a 1/8 thaler planchet with double weight of 1/8 thaler.
Gold-plated silver, diameter 26 mm, weight 7.92 g
