Lot description
A brass commemorative medal issued on the occasion of the centenary of the canonization of John of Nepomuk, which took place in 1729 during the pontificate of Pope Benedict XIII.The front side depicts the figure of St. John of Nepomuk with five stars around his head, which is his traditional iconographic attribute. It stands on a decorative plinth, complete with an angel and other symbolic elements.
The reverse bears an inscription in Czech:
"MEMORIAL OF THE CENTENNIAL GLORY OF JAN NEPOMUCKÉ'S SWATE PROCLAMATION IN 1829."
The medal was probably issued as a souvenir for pilgrims and participants in celebrations connected with the St. John's cult, which was in the 18th and 19th centuries. century especially strong in Central Europe.
