For his actions on March 1, 1917, while stationed in the basket of a balloon in the sector of the 110th Infantry Division near the Tukkum Highway, conducting reconnaissance of enemy rear positions to locate enemy batteries. The balloon came under heavy and effective fire from an enemy 6-inch battery. Despite precise fire and continuous shell bursts near the balloon's winch, he continued his observations until the firing battery was located and its position accurately marked on the map. After completing this task, which enabled our heavy artillery to adjust fire on the newly identified battery, the descent of the balloon was carried out under continuous shelling, with clear danger to the observer’s life. СПРОДИС Карл Янович — VI Сибирский корпусной авиационный отряд, рядовой. За то, что 1.03.1917, находясь в корзине аэростата на участке 110-й пех. дивизии в районе Туккумского шоссе, производил наблюдения за тылом противника с целью выяснения неприятельских батарей. Аэростат был подвергнут сильному и действительному обстрелу неприятельской 6-ти дюймовой батареи. Несмотря на меткий огонь и непрерывные разрывы вблизи самой лебедки аэростата, он продолжал свои наблюдения до тех пор, пока стрелявшая батарея им не была обнаружена и место расположения точно указано на карте. После выполнения этой задачи, давшей возможность нашей тяжелой артиллерии пристреляться по вновь появившейся батарее, выбор аэростата производился с явной опасностью для жизни наблюдателя, под непрерывным обстрелом.
