The Order of Alexander Nevsky was a Soviet military decoration established on July 29, 1942, during World War II. It features a silver, star-shaped badge with a central medallion. The medallion depicts Alexander Nevsky, a legendary Russian medieval prince, shown in a helmet and armor. The portrait design was inspired by Nikolay Cherkasov’s portrayal of Nevsky in Sergei Eisenstein's 1938 film Alexander Nevsky. The medallion is surrounded by a red enamel ring inscribed with the words "АЛЕКСАНДР НЕВСКИЙ" (Alexander Nevsky). Behind the medallion are symbolic elements, including crossed swords, a bow, and a shield, signifying military strength and valor. The outer edges of the badge form a five-pointed star with radiating silver rays. During World War II, approximately 42,165 Orders of Alexander Nevsky were awarded. The Order became highly regarded for its strict eligibility criteria, ensuring that only those who exhibited true leadership and valor received it. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Order was incorporated into the Russian Federation's honors system and continues to be awarded today, albeit with a slightly modified design and updated criteria.
