Handwritten letter on embossed monogrammed letterhead (B. S.) dated Schloss Harmannsdorf, February 26, 1894. The letter, written in an elegant hand, documents the correspondence of this prominent Austrian pacifist and writer, the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1905).Included in the collection is a rare period photograph of Bertha von Suttner, taken at the renowned Indian studio Bourne & Shepherd, Calcutta, 1877. The back of the photograph bears her handwritten signature and a short dedication, confirming her stay in India.
Bertha von Suttner, née Countess Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau, was one of the most significant figures of the peace movement at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Her famous novel Die Waffen nieder! (Lay Down Your Arms!) from 1889 became a cornerstone of European pacifism and inspired Alfred Nobel to establish the Nobel Peace Prize.
A remarkable historical collection documenting the life and legacy of this extraordinary figure.
