Cup with saucer
Japan
Meiji period, 1868-1912
Porcelain colourfully painted
Diameter saucer 19 cm, height cup approx. 6 cm
On the bottom fan-shaped mark "Chindozo" ("made by Chindo")
Cup and saucer in European form, made of thin-walled porcelain, filled with figures in the Satsuma style, the sparsely visible background in gold.
Chindo was a well-known producer of so-called Yokohama ware, export porcelain named after the port of export. Stylistically, the pieces are characterised by eclecticism, with porcelain from Arita and, as here, ceramics from Satsuma serving as models.
