The featured collection of extremely attractive netsuke includes only figurative representations. All these figurines were created in the 19th century and are made of ivory. They are characterized by rich ornamental decoration and beautiful detailing. Most of the figurines are signed. The collection includes 8 figurines. The largest of them is about 6 cm high, the smallest about 4 cm. All figurines are in good condition, with no major damage, sometimes minor cracks or joining of individual pieces of material are visible.
Below is a brief description of each figurine, starting with the largest:
1) Depicts a nō theater actor with a distinctive mask, seated in a seiza, wearing a beautiful ornamental kimono with long sleeves. The figure has a bucket of water in front of him, and the whole thing is signed on the underside.
2) A figurine depicting a figure with a fish held under his arm and a fan in his hand. This is one of the seven gods of luck - Ebisu, the patron saint of fishermen, the god of luck and prosperity. He is depicted wearing an eboshi hat with a beautiful ornamental kimono. The figurine is unsigned.
3) Depiction of a smiling, corpulent monk, who holds a fan in one hand and raises the other upward. Behind the belt of his ornate and colorful kimono, we can even recognize the inrō. This is a figurine with an exceptional level of detail. Signed on the underside.
4) Figurine of a samurai carrying a lantern with a knocker to announce the hour in his hand and two swords behind his belt. The extremely detailed figurine also reflects the details of the samurai costume. The samurai is dressed in a hakama and full kamishimo, and his hair is pinned up in a distinctive bun. The sculpture is signed on the underside.
5) Figure of a long-bearded sage with a scroll in his hand, wearing an ornate robe. It is a sennin - a holy sage from Japanese mythology. Signed traditionally on the underside.
6) Depicts a farmer sitting on a sack of grain, wearing a beautiful, ornate kimono. The figure holds a bowl of water in his hand. Unsigned.
7) Figure of an elderly monk with a fan in hand. Signed on the underside.
8) A figure lifting a bag of rice in a crouch. The figurine is interesting in that it reflects the figure in an unusual pose and is glued from several pieces of ivory. Signed on the underside.
