Born in the village of Co Do, not far from Hanoi, Nguyen Sy Tot is considered the founder of a thriving school of painting that developed in that rural district. His painting are mainly on paper and concerns themes connected with the daily life of the place where he lived. In his native village a museum was founded to collect his works and works of other local artists.
