Biography
A Polish folk artist. She came from a large, poor peasant family. She spent most of her life working on the farm and raising her children. However, she constantly demonstrated an artistic passion, which manifested itself in decorating her own cottage with multicolored motifs—she painted on the walls, ceiling, stove, and doors. Her work was discovered very late, not until the early 1970s, when the artist herself was already seventy-seven years old. Her later patron, Jacek Łodziński, helped spread awareness of Gawłowa’s work; she then began creating numerous compositions on religious and folk themes on paper and cardboard. Łodziński also organized the painter’s only exhibition, which took place at the Ethnographic Museum in Kraków in 1977.
