Lot information
This drawing by Luděk Marold (1865-1898) is a brilliant example of his masterful mastery of figure, composition and atmosphere, which he achieved especially in his illustrations and journalistic drawings. The scene depicts a group of men in formal clothes, gathered around a scientific experiment. Here, Marold combines a free, dynamic drawing line with a precise capture of the expression and physicality of the individual characters. The composition is lively, dramatic and gives an almost theatrical impression - the figures are arranged in a circular arrangement, creating a strong sense of tension and concentration. The artist brilliantly captures a moment of intellectual preoccupation and scientific enthusiasm, while the overall presentation remains light and painterly.
This work is an eloquent proof of Marold's ability to combine realism with narrative energy, which ranks him among the most important Czech draftsmen and illustrators of the late 19th century
