Marc Chagall (actually Moshe Segal) is one of the most recognizable artists of the 20th century, known for his unique style combining
fairy tale, Jewish folklore and elements of the avant-garde
He was born in 1887 in Vitebsk (today's Belarus) to an Orthodox Jewish family, which forever shaped his artistic sensibility.
Although he drew from Cubism, Fauvism and Surrealism, he created his own, indistinguishable painting language based on symbolism and intense color.
Flying lovers, musicians (violinists), animals (goats, roosters) and scenes from shtetl life recur in his works.
