Oval relief depicting a frontal shot of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus on her left shoulder. The figures are shown in shallow, softly modeled relief with soft chiaroscuro transitions. The faces have delicate, idealized features, with closed or slightly closed eyelids, which gives the composition an expression of concentration and contemplation.
The Mother of God is depicted wearing a veil and crown, with a clearly marked nimbus with a radial arrangement. The infant also has a crown and a subtly marked nimbus. The robes of both figures are worked out softly, with a simplified rhythm of folds.
The entire piece is set in an oval metal frame with a slightly raised rim, with a hanging collar attached at the top. Relief of one color.
Plaster (cast and elaborated by hand), metal frame (copper), suspension piece.
Dimensions: 7.2 x 6 cm
Condition as shown in photos.
The object represents a devotional production trend popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries, in which sculptural forms made in plaster or composites were widely distributed as affordable objects of private worship. Such depictions of the Virgin and Child refer to the centuries-old iconographic tradition of Christianity, combining elements of Western art with a simplified workshop style.
The use of a metal frame and sling indicates that the object was intended for wall display probably in a domestic space. The relief may have originally been protected by glass.
The object retains significant collector value as an example of private devotion and religious production of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
